The First Mayor of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, Peter Tschentscher, has appointed Prof. Jann Lay, an expert in economic development at the German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA), as a new member of the Hamburg Council for Sustainable Development Policy. He was presented as a new council member at the council meeting on 9 July.

Since 2010, the Council for Sustainable Development Policy has been advising the Hamburg Senate on matters such as cooperation with foreign partners and development education in the Hanseatic city. The expert panel draws up technical reports and recommendations, which are also published for members of the state parliament to view. The council consists of 12 honorary members. Its term ends at the end of the parliamentary period.

Jann Lay is associate professor at the University of Göttingen, head of the GIGA research programme “Growth and Development” and acting director of the GIGA Institute for African Affairs. His work as an economist and doctor of political science at the GIGA also includes advising political decision-makers, including the World Bank, the German service provider in the field of international cooperation for sustainable development GIZ, and the OECD Development Centre.
